COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an introduction to the principles of macroeconomics.  This is the branch of economics that studies the structure and operation of the U.S. economic system, including economic institutions, resources, price mechanisms, public finance, economic fluctuations, national income accounting, macroeconomic theory, fiscal policy, the banking system, monetary policy, and economic growth.   

 

 

CLASS HOURS

Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30 AM to 12:50 PM.

 

 

TEXT AND RESOURCES

ECONMacro 2012-2013 Edition (Macro 3), by William A. McEachern (Cengage Learning, 2012).   Access to the Internet is required, as is the use of e-mail and ANGEL.

 

 

OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, successful students will

·         Understand key ideas, concepts and principles related to macroeconomics,

·         Learn the fundamental economic concepts of scarcity, choice, opportunity costs, supply and demand, and production possibilities curve;

·         Learn about gross domestic product (GDP) and related statistics;

·         Learn the appropriate discretionary monetary and fiscal policies given a set of economic conditions;

·         Develop the critical analytical and philosophical framework necessary to reach more rational and responsible decisions regarding economic matters;

·         Gain an awareness of the changing international economic environment and ramifications for the United States; and

·         Communicate effectively in writing and orally about key ideas and concepts related to macroeconomics.

 

KEYS TO SUCCESS

·         Late or missed assignments and exams earn zero points.  The fine print:  In the case of an unavoidable emergency, it may be possible for a student - who takes the initiative to contact the instructor immediately (within hours, not days) - to earn partial credit.

·         Please attend class and participate respectfully.  Missing class means missing any associated participation and homework points.  No make-up work is provided.  Plan a consistent time to do your work and have a backup plan for doing online assignments. 

·         Plagiarism and cheating result in failing the assignment and class, respectively.

·         Assistance is available at the Student Learning Center.

·         Texting, talking on the phone, using a computer for purposes other than class notes/assignments, sleeping, arriving late, leaving early and/or other disrespectful classroom behaviors will affect your grade.
