Themes of the Week:

This week's geologic themes include an introduction to the different landscape regions of the Pacific Northwest, their geologic origins, and how principles of geology are used to put the history of geologic events in order. In addition, you and your classmates will introduce yourselves to each other and you will become accustomed to the online classroom.

To fully explore these themes you will:

• Meet and greet the other students in the class.
• Describe a geological experience you have had.
• State which types of geologic activity are occurring today in the Pacific Northwest.
• Show on a map where the major landscape regions of the Pacific Northwest are located.
• Describe the physical characteristics of the landscape regions, such as the presence of mountain ranges, plateaus, and major rivers.
• For each landscape region, list one or two geologic processes that have occurred there and not in neighboring landscape regions.
• Describe how relative and absolute geologic time are determined.
• Recognize each major type of unconformity and describe how it originates.
• Apply the principles of relative geologic age to a layered sequence of rock.
• Place geologic events on the geologic timescale.

By completing the following:

1. Introduce yourself in the Mini-Bio Discussion in the online classroom and greet other students there.
2. Read Lecture 1-PNW landscape regions, geologic activities that affect them, and geologic time along with its linked Basics and Focus pages and refer to them in your assignments.
3. Participate in the Week 1 Discussion in the online classroom. See Weekly Discussion Rubric
4. Read Week 1 Lab Assignment. Complete Lab Assignment #1 by:
   1. submitting the Lab # 1 answer form in the online classroom
   2. completing and mailing, via postal mail, the two maps

6. At the end of the week, compose a summary of the main things you learned about the geology of the Pacific Northwest and post it in the online classroom Week 1 Summary. See the Weekly Summary Rubric.
